60 Drum Puns That Really Hit the Right Note

By
Melissa Jones

Drummers are the most underappreciated people in music and I will die on this hill. Every guitarist gets a poster, every vocalist gets a biopic, and the drummer gets told to “keep it down” during practice. Anyway, I’ve been collecting drum puns for an embarrassingly long time, and some of these are genuinely good while others are crimes against language that I’m committing on purpose.

1. The Classic Opener

Drum roll, please! …That’s it. That’s the pun. We’re starting simple because the night is young and we have a long way to fall.

2. The Sticker

I told my friend I was thinking about quitting percussion lessons, and she said, “No, you’ve gotta stick with it.” I said, “I’m trying, but I keep losing my sticks.” She didn’t laugh. We’re not friends anymore.

3.

My drumming skills are un-beat-able.

(I’m sorry. I know. We’re moving on.)

4. A Cymbal of Hope

Why did the marching band elect the drummer as their leader? Because he was a cymbal of excellence.

5.

I’m feeling really off-beat today.

6. The One I’m Actually Proud Of

A drummer walks into a bar and orders a drink. The bartender says, “You look tired.” The drummer says, “Yeah, I’ve been dealing with a lot of repercussions.” This one took me AGES to set up properly and I genuinely think it’s the best pun on this entire list. The double meaning of repercussions, both consequences AND the act of repeated percussion, is just *chef’s kiss*. I texted this to my partner and they left me on read for three hours, which honestly is the highest compliment a pun can receive.

7. Rapid Fire Round

  • Don’t crash the party, just play the cymbal.
  • That drummer really knows how to kick it. (Kick drum. Get it? You get it.)
  • He’s got a hi-hat attitude and honestly it’s warranted.

8.

What do you call a drummer who just broke up with their girlfriend? Heartbeat.

9. For the Instagram Crowd

Caption this: “Just trying to drum up some excitement.” Works for literally any photo of you doing anything remotely interesting. You’re welcome.

10.

I like my coffee like I like my drumming: percussive. Strong. And way too loud for 7 a.m.

11. The Beat Poet

I told people I’m not just a drummer, I’m a beat poet. Nobody at the open mic night appreciated this. The Kerouac fans were offended. The drummers were confused. I was alone at the merch table.

12.

Why did the drummer bring a ladder to the gig? To reach the high notes on the hi-hat.

(This one is bad. Like really bad. I included it because I have no editorial standards.)

13. A Real Conversation I Had

“What’s your snare drum’s name?”
“I don’t name my drums.”
“That’s because you have no flair. Or should I say… no snare.”
“Please leave my garage.”

14.

That joke was so bad it deserved a rimshot. Ba dum tss.

15. The Paradiddle Predicament

Okay this one requires some actual drum knowledge: What did the student say when the teacher asked them to play a paradiddle? “I’m in a bit of a para-pickle.” Look, if you know what a paradiddle is (RLRR LRLL, the foundational rudiment), this is mildly amusing. If you don’t, just scroll past and pretend this number doesn’t exist. I can’t explain rudiments AND be funny at the same time.

16.

I’m really beating myself up over that last gig.

17. Tom Foolery

Why do drummers always name their floor toms? Because they’re tired of tom-foolery without proper attribution. This is a stretch and I know it’s a stretch. The floor tom deserves better than this pun but the floor tom isn’t gonna get it.

18.

My drum teacher told me I had no rhythm. I said, “That strikes me as harsh.”

19. The Triple Threat

  • What’s a drummer’s favorite part of a meal? The drumstick. (Poultry AND percussion.)
  • What’s a drummer’s second favorite meal? Beets.
  • What do they wash it down with? Anything on tap. (Tap. Like hi-hat taps. This one barely counts.)

20.

That drummer has a great groove going. And by groove I mean both his rhythm and the literal groove he’s worn into the stage floor from stomping so hard.

Quick sidebar, have you ever noticed how drum puns basically write themselves because half of English idioms already use percussion words? “Beat around the bush,” “march to your own drum,” “bang on about something.” The language was pre-loaded for this. English is a drum pun delivery system that occasionally functions as a method of communication.

21.

Don’t stick around if you don’t like the beat.

22. The Brush Off

I asked the jazz drummer if he wanted to hang out after the show. He gave me the brush-off. (Jazz drummers use brushes instead of sticks and if you didn’t know that, now you do, and also this pun is way better than you initially thought, admit it.)

23.

What do you call a drummer in a three-piece suit? Dressed to the nines. What do you call a drummer in a nine-piece kit? Dressed to impress.

Ngl that second one doesn’t fully work but I’m keeping it.

24. Instagram Caption #2

“Living life one beat at a time 🥁”, for when you need something basic but functional. Like a metronome. Like YOU, if you’re posting this caption.

25.

I tried to make a drum out of recycled materials. It was rubbish. (It was literally rubbish. It was made of rubbish. The pun is also rubbish. Layers.)

26. The Ghost Note

This one’s for the niche crowd: What do you call a drummer who plays notes so softly you can barely hear them? A ghost writer. Ghost notes are those super quiet snare hits between the main beats that give funk and R&B their pocket feel, they’re technically there but almost imperceptible. If you play drums, you just smiled. If you don’t, you just Googled “ghost notes drumming” and honestly that’s a win too.

27.

My neighbor complained about my drumming. I told him to beat it.

28. The Proud Parent

“My kid just started drum lessons.”
“Oh nice, how’s it going?”
“It’s making quite an impact.”
“…”
“Get it? Impact? Because you hit, “
“I got it, Dave.”

29.

I’m not drumming around, I’m serious!

30. The Halfway Point Confession

Some of these are getting worse, not better. I want you to know I’m aware. Let’s keep going anyway because quitting is for people who don’t own a blog.

31.

Why did the snare drum go to therapy? Too much tension. (Snare drums literally have tension rods. This is both a pun and an accurate description of every drummer I’ve ever met.)

32. Send This to Your Drummer Friend

“Hey, are you free Friday night or do you have a gig?” “I’m free.” “Cool, wanna hang?” “Actually wait, I just remembered I double-booked.” “Like a double bass pedal?” “I’m blocking your number.”

33.

My favorite part of the drum kit is the bass drum. No treble.

34.

What did the drummer say when they got a perfect score on their exam? “Nailed it.” Which is also what they said when they fixed their broken drum hardware. Versatile phrase for a versatile musician.

35. The Flam

Okay, second niche one: What’s a drummer’s favorite type of dessert? Flambé. Because it sounds like flam. A flam is when you hit a grace note just barely before the main stroke, it’s one of the 40 essential rudiments and it’s pronounced exactly like the first syllable of flambé. This pun is a reach but I’m proud of the obscurity factor and nobody can take that from me.

36.

That new drum shop really knows how to drum up business.

37. The Existential One

If a drummer plays in the woods and no one’s around to hear it, does it make a sound? Yes. It does. Drums are loud. That’s the whole thing about drums.

38.

  • What do you call a sleeping drummer? A rest. (Music joke.)
  • What do you call a drummer who won’t stop talking? A percussion discussion.
  • What do you call a drummer with half a brain? Gifted. (Wait, that’s just a musician joke. I’m leaving it in anyway.)

39.

I asked the drummer how she stays so fit. She said, “Lots of reps.” She meant repetitions. And also reps as in rehearsals. It works on two levels and she definitely didn’t plan it, which makes it even better.

40. Instagram Caption #3

“Caught between a rock and a hard place”, posted with a photo of yourself between a rock band’s drum kit and… okay fine, this one needs a very specific photo to work. But IF you have that photo? Gold.

41.

The drum kit broke during the concert. It was a total crash.

42.

Why don’t drums ever win arguments? They always get beaten.

43. The Sentimental One

My grandfather was a drummer in the war. He always said music kept his spirits up and his tempo steady. He marched to the beat of his own drum, literally. I miss that man. He’d have hated this blog post tbh.

44.

What’s a drummer’s blood type? B-flat.

(Okay that’s more of a general music pun but I’m claiming it for the percussion community.)

45. The Rim Job, Wait No

Let me rephrase. THE RIMSHOT. That joke was so bad it needed a rimshot. I already used this one earlier, didn’t I? See, this is what happens when you try to write 60 puns about one topic. You start going in circles. Like a drum. Like a… circular drum. I need water.

46.

My drum teacher said I need to work on my timing. I said, “Give me a minute.”

47.

I tried to sell my old drum kit online. The ad said “Comes with a lot of baggage.” Because of the drum bags. And also because that kit saw me through a divorce.

48. The Polyrhythm Pun

Third niche entry: What do you call a drummer who can play in 7/8 and 4/4 at the same time? A poly-want-a-cracker. This is genuinely the worst pun on this list and I’ve been sitting on it for two years waiting for a place to put it. Polyrhythms are when you layer different time signatures on top of each other, it’s incredibly hard to do and this pun does not honor that difficulty in any way.

49.

The drummer got arrested. He was charged with battery.

50. The Home Stretch

“You’ve been playing drums for six hours.”
“I know, I’m on a roll.”
“A drum roll?”
“No, an egg roll. Yes, a drum roll. Obviously.”

51.

What do you call a drum solo that goes on too long? A beating.

52. Instagram Caption #4

“Shell yeah 🐚🥁”, because the body of a drum is called the shell. Works great. Short. Punchy. Percussive, even. Post it with literally any drum photo and watch the likes trickle in like a slow fill building to a chorus.

53.

I wanted to join a drumline but they said I wasn’t up to tempo. I told them that was just a phase. (Phase shifting is a thing in drumline, it’s when sections intentionally offset their timing. If you marched DCI you’re nodding right now. If you didn’t, just trust me.)

54.

Drummers do it with rhythm. That’s not even a pun, it’s just a bumper sticker I saw in 2004 and never forgot.

55. The Tub Thump

Why do old-timey people call drums “tubs”? Idk, but it means every bathtub is technically a drum if you hit it hard enough. I get knocked down, but I get up again. You’re never gonna keep me down. That’s Chumbawamba and it’s barely related but I’m past caring.

56.

What did the hi-hat say to the crash cymbal? “You’re so dramatic. I just open and close quietly.”

57.

My therapist said I use drumming as a coping mechanism. I said, “That’s a fair point.” She said, “You need to address the underlying issues.” I said, “The only thing I’m addressing is this snare head.” She’s raising her rates.

58. The Lug Nut

What do you call a drummer who’s obsessed with hardware? A lug nut. (Lugs are the metal pieces that hold the tension rods on a drum. This pun is kinda mid but the wordplay is technically sound, no pun intended, okay that one was also intended.)

59.

I started a drum circle in the park. It had a nice ring to it.

60. Instagram Caption #5 / The Finale

“If life gives you drumsticks, make noise.” That’s the caption AND the life philosophy AND the exit line.

Anyway, I’ve got a headache now. Probably from all the percussion. Or the puns. Same thing, really, both involve repeated hits to the head that you kinda signed up for.
